Wabi-Sabi is a Japanese term that evokes an elegant contrast between two very different aesthetics. Sabi, the clean, geometric man-made aspect marries perfectly with Wabi, the rough, withered beauty of Japanese natural elements.
This project is a custom website designed for a fictional Japanese-inspired cultural festival on January 7, 2016. The festival features various traditional Japanese activities, including Tea Ceremony, Sumi-e, and traditional music. The intent of the design was to craft an organic and elegant website that embodies the aforementioned aesthetic principles of wabi and sabi - a balance between rough, withered visuals, and clean, geometric lines.
This web project utilizes HTML, CSS and JavaScript, but is not responsive; it was our introduction to JS in hand-coded design during our Sophomore year. All of the photography is shot by myself, and the project was quite inspiring; I have a great deal of affection for the elegant rigidity of Japanese culture, and it was a pleasure to incorporate that into a project.
